Workplace and fun place. Collaborative space and play space. Those are some of the features integrated in the new LEGO® building complex serving as global gathering point in the LEGO Headquarters.

A clear and innovative expression of what LEGO® play is all about. That is one way to describe the distinct new office building, which the LEGO Group plans to build in Billund, Denmark.

From the collaborative workspace inside and to the public park that surrounds it; from the welcoming and informal feeling in LEGO People House to the grand and colorful space in the atrium; from architectural features modelled over known LEGO elements to an interior with bright colors and open space, the building will have a distinct LEGO feel.

“We want a distinct office building that clearly conveys the LEGO values, and which truly expresses the creative, innovative culture of our company.  I am very excited that we can now present our vision for this new building, both to our employees and to the community,” says Claus Flyger Pejstrup, Senior Vice President at the LEGO Group, and responsible for the LEGO Group Headquarters in Denmark.

LEGO® People House as employees want it

An integral part of the new office building is LEGO® People House; an area housing facilities for various activities, all based on input from LEGO employees. As such, the new office building will serve as both workspace and play space for LEGO employees.

“LEGO People House creates a unique social environment that serves as a vibrant, global gathering point, not only for the employees working there on a daily basis but also for the many LEGO employees from the rest of the world, when they visit Billund. It will house exciting facilities, where employees can be physically active and socialize, both during and outside working hours. It is our clear intent that the atmosphere will be both informal and inspirational, making it ideal for employees to get together with colleagues from around the world,” says Claus Flyger Pejstrup.

Part of global ambition of continuing growth

The LEGO Group employs more than 17,000 people around the world, of which more than 4,000 LEGO® employees of 35 nationalities work in Denmark, spanning product development, marketing, manufacturing, engineering, quality and various other functions.  Over the course of the past years, the number of employees in Billund has increased significantly, with 250 new people added in 2015 alone. So the new office building will contribute to solving the increasing problem of having sufficient workspace for the current employee base, but also to the continuing growth globally:

“In recent years, we have continued to reach more and more children all over the world with LEGO® play, while also welcoming thousands of new LEGO employees at LEGO sites all over the world. We are in the process of expanding our factories in Mexico and Hungary significantly, and we have opened global main offices around the world from London to Singapore, some of which we have already expanded further since opening. It is our clear ambition to reach even more children in the years to come. Therefore, expanding in Billund, which is and will continue to be the vibrant headquarters for the company, is both natural and important,” says CEO and President of the LEGO Group, Jørgen Vig Knudstorp.

Facts: New main office building in Billund:

Total area: 52,000 square meters
Architect: C.F. Møller
Consultative engineer: Niras
Builder: KIRKBI A/S

The building will have an architectural shape to provide optimal daylight conditions for the total office space. Furthermore, the building is constructed to ensure low energy consumption and to enrich the structure with internal yet outdoor green courtyard areas.
The new office building integrates with the master plan for Billund Municipality.

Offices:

While the LEGO Group has been well represented around the world through local sales offices for several years, in 2013 the LEGO Group reinforced its commitment of globalizing the company by announcing its intention to grow and establish a number of main offices. Currently, the LEGO Group has five main offices around the world:

- Billund, Denmark (Headquarter)
- Enfield, Connecticut, USA
- London, UK
- Shanghai, China
- Singapore

LEGO® People House is still a project in the making and meant to be a fully integrated part of LEGO Campus in Billund. When finished, it will function as a creative workspace as well as host activities and events meant to boost health, creativity and bring our employees closer together both during and after office hours.

The doors will officially open in 2021, and until then, a project team will be dedicated to planning and overseeing the development. The physical spaces have already been designed and are currently under construction.

"BILLUND, DENMARK, October 28, 2019: After four years of planning and construction, the LEGO Group opened the first phase of its new, state-of-the-art Campus at its headquarters in Billund, Denmark today. Designed by C.F. Møller Architects, the campus will span 54,000 square metres and house more than 2,000 employees when it is finished in 2021.

Hoping to express the core values of the LEGO Group: imagination, creativity, fun, learning, caring and quality, the inspiration for the new building came from a painting in the LEGO Group owner Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen’s office. In it, a boy proudly holds up his creation of a building made with LEGO® bricks. This gave the architects license to adopt a more playful approach to their design, something that is apparent in the details of the structure. These include the use of LEGO bricks in the exterior walls, the placement of two, gigantic yellow bricks on the roof, and an entryway made of bricks.

Niels B. Christiansen, CEO of the LEGO Group said: “It’s wonderful to see these first two buildings open. The team has worked hard to create a workspace that reflects our values and instills a sense of fun. Our mission is to inspire children so it’s important we provide our talented colleagues with an environment that is playful and inspires creativity and innovative thinking. Building this special environment has been a massive collaborative effort and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed.”

For the past two years, Anneke Beerkens, Senior Workplace Anthropologist at the LEGO Group, has worked with hundreds of employees from around the world to design the ultimate LEGO workplace.

“In the same way you build with LEGO bricks, we took elements our people love and brought them all together to create something unique. For example, employees told us that they wanted the freedom to choose an environment that suited them best for whatever they were working on, but also liked to stay close to teammates. So we built team ‘neighbourhoods’ which are a mix of individual and collaborative workspaces designed to create a caring environment where people can do great quality work.”

Five hundred employees have already moved into two of the eight new buildings, which also include play areas, lounges and outdoor parks open to the public.

Focus on Sustainability

Sustainability is a core tenet for the LEGO Group, referred to as the “Planet Promise.” To meet this promise, builders covered the roof of the nearby parking garage with 4,150 solar panels to produce more than 1 million kWh which will supply half of the energy of the campus. The exterior of the garage is decorated with a design inspired by LEGO road playmats in a nod to the company’s iconic products.

The rooftops of the new buildings are covered with Sedum plants which absorb water and CO2 and rainwater will be used to irrigate the green parks in the campus area. Inside, for example, the consultants chose a special gypsum fibre board material over standard materials because this stronger material requires less steel framing, saving 22 tons of steel and 650 tons CO2 emissions.

When finalized in 2021, the central area called “People House” will offer a large auditorium, fitness centre, arts and crafts workshop, café and accommodation for employees visiting Billund."

The LEGO Group Launches New Campus With Play At Its Heart In Billund, Denmark

Brick by brick, the state-of-the-art Campus is designed to inspire innovation and creativity for some 2,000 employees and provide an inspiring base for all LEGO Group employees worldwide.

BILLUND, DENMARK, April 5th, 2022: After five years of construction and planning, the LEGO Group is celebrating the official opening of its state-of-the-art Campus at its headquarters in Billund, Denmark today. Designed by C.F. Møller Architects, the campus spans 54,000 square metres, creating an innovative workplace for approx. 2000 colleagues, and a home away from home for all LEGO Group colleagues across the world.

Reflecting the LEGO Group values of ‘Imagination, Fun, Creativity, Caring, Learning, and Quality’, the Campus has been designed to provide a playful, inclusive, and collaborative environment that enables employees to develop the best play experiences for children all over the world.

An important element in LEGO® Campus is the ‘People House’ a concept developed in close collaboration with employees that provides a space for all colleagues to network and play during and after working hours. With initial designs first developed in 2014, the ‘People House’ is just one of the many features across the campus that enables a more flexible environment to work and play and is reflective of the hybrid working style that is in place across the LEGO Group. Created as a place for relaxation, inspiration and recharging, the ‘People House’ features facilities including: a state-of-the-art fitness studio, creative workshop space, a LEGO homestay for visiting employees, a cinema, outside park and activity zone, kitchen for communal cooking and networking and a health clinic. Employees’ families are also welcome to use the facilities.

Niels B. Christiansen, CEO of the LEGO Group said: “It’s a great moment to see our new Campus officially open after many years of planning and construction. Many colleagues have contributed to shaping a workspace that reflects our values and instills a sense of fun not just for our employees in Billund, but for all our LEGO teams across the world who regularly visit. Our mission is to inspire children so it’s important we provide a vibrant, playful workplace that enables employees to deliver inspiring experiences for kids”.

Creating a sustainable workplace

Sustainability is a focus for the LEGO Group, and this has been central to the design of the new Campus. Achieving a Gold level LEED certification, the Campus is a high quality, low-energy office building partly powered by solar panels installed on the roof of the nearby parking facility.

In addition, the Campus also features:
- Special gypsum fibreboard – which saved 650,000 kg of emissions during construction, additionally 1000 tons of construction waste was recycled during the construction process
- Sedum plants on roof surfaces collecting rainwater which irrigates the surrounding green spaces
- Workplace waste is sorted into 10 different categories
- Flexible and open workspaces with “green” partitions of plants and planters
- All outdoor furniture was made from waste LEGO Bricks. 5000 kg of LEGO waste has been recycled.
- A focus on biodiversity with a wealth of indigenous plants, trees and natural environments planted to support wildlife

LEGO Campus will officially open from April 5th for all LEGO colleagues and their families. Celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, the LEGO group has grown from a small carpenter’s workshop to a brand present in more than 130 countries worldwide.
